Significance A Significance Novel Book 1 Significance Series eBook Shelly Crane Reviews
I was excited when I started reading this book. I loved the characters and the premise. I still like them a lot and will probably read the rest of the books. According to reviews I have read since starting it, some people feel it is a lot like the Twilight books. I never read them (and don't really care to) so I can't say one way or the other. I'm okay with the supernatural power thing. Just thankful it wasn't vampires or witches. They are sooooo overdone lately. I went from love to like because I feel there wasn't enough story. The bonding aspect was over emphasized way too much at the expense of an otherwise good book. I got the feeling it might have been the author's attempt to beef up the page count to make for a longer series. This is, of course, only my opinion and I hope it doesn't deter anyone from reading it. If you like YA fantasy, I think you could do worse than to give Significance a try.
My Rating 3 stars.
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions Going into this book, I had read some reviews by people who hated this book and some by people who had loved it. I wasn't sure what I'd feel. I had to admit that the points that some readers brought up rang true. It is kind of creepy to think that being apart from each other literally hurts them. It's kind of strange and maybe not a great message to be sending out.
However, the novel was intriguing. I thought that the idea of a soul mate was interesting. I thought the characters were well-developed. The novel did bear traces of being self-published and there were several errors, but nothing major.
I thought the novel was well-written to some extent. I'm not dying to read the sequel, but I am curious enough about the series that I probably will.
I thought that the novel would have been stronger if it ended earlier. The climax hit too early in my opinion and then the rest of the novel kind of sagged, but I still enjoyed the novel.
The Characters Caleb was a character that I wanted to like. I didn't dislike him, but I didn't love him either. Even though Caleb and Maggie were super close, I still felt like I wanted to know more about him.
I found him bossy and annoying at times, but I always felt like he had a good reason. The society in the novel is kind of male-dominated, but it didn't irk me as much as I thought it would. He was an intriguing character.
Maggie was a character that I did like. I enjoyed watching her perspective through the novel. I thought she needed to stand up for herself more, especially with Caleb. She let him walk over her too much in my opinion. I did like reading about her though.
Kyle was a character that I loved in the beginning and then very quickly started hating by the end. He was just such a brat. Not sure what to think of him.
As far as the secondary characters went, I felt they were pretty cookie-cutter. You have the mom who's run off leaving the daughter with the "dysfunctional dad" who doesn't keep tabs on her. That part was too cliched and didn't make me like the novel as much I might have otherwise.
So why 3 stars? It just didn't grab my attention like I wanted it to. I have a curiosity to see what happens, but I am not hooked.
Warnings/Side-notes It's young adult. There are no sex scenes, violence, or foul language. However, it's definitely for older YAs as it mentions sex several times and has references to partying, drinking, and some minor sexual innuendos and descriptions.
The Wrap-up A novel that has great potential. It was unique, but it just could have been so much better.
Love,
Danica Page
I would've liked to give this book five stars, but (no spoilers) the ending mercilessly dragged on and on. After a great climax and an open ended resolution, the book simply continues on and on with minute details where I hoped something would happen but no cliff hanger or anything exciting. The author should've adopted the normal model for series after a quick resolution, give a sneak peak chapter from the next book that teases us to buy it (rather than 20 pages of mundane traveling itinerary and shopping). However, I do give it four stars for being interesting, unique, with great blending of paranormal elements with realism. The insta-love trope even has great backing and reasoning behind it making it work well. The characters were well developed, even some minor characters were developed well. Dialogue was realistic and the author showed more than told; it also is refreshingly complex but not too difficult for a YA audience. I thought about continuing the series, but in light of the ending, I'm not enticed enough; also the number of novels in the series makes me worry it will drag on and on.
Unfortunately, this book simply did not work for me....it started out somewhat shaky, but then seemed to have an interesting storyline....however, as the chapters progressed I found myself asking "Where is this story going?"....it seemed halted in it's progression; repeating itself over and over....I kept hoping for a turning point but it never came....the supernatural element could have been intriguing but it never got fully explained...I didn't even know what kind of supernatural beings they were...then it became so far fetched in it's drama element that I found myself skim reading the last several chapters simply to have this book end...a book that could of had great potential but fell flat.
LOVE THIS SERIES, A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO LOVE SOMEONE AND LOVES ROMANCE. I REALLY MISS READING THE SERIES YOU FEEL SO MUCH APART OF THE CHARACTORS LIVES
