Sugar On The Edge is by far the best book Sawyer Bennett has written! She has proven her growth as an author, created more complex characters, gave them more of an edgy darkness, created a plot that was unique, and merged several genres together that work perfectly together.

Sugar On The Edge can be read as a stand alone novel or in the Last Call series order. The beloved characters from the previous books are present in Sugar On The Edge. They lend a strong supporting role for the characters without influencing the direction of this story or having their own stories repeated or referred to throughout the book. Sawyer Bennett allowed her leading characters, Gavin Cooke and Savannah Shepard, to take the readers away in a completely new direction.

British author Gavin Cooke has come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to complete his book. He is on a deadline. His destructive behaviors, drinking, and disregard have left his publishers and agent in a corner. They have suggested he take himself out of the seedy streets of London and buckle down. He is an arrogant self absorbed, dirty mouthed, critical, and contemptuous arse. He knows it and makes no apologies. His crude mouth, diabolical behavior, and self destruction have just changed geographical locations.

Gavin Cooke is sex on a stick! His filthy mouth and filthy moves will have you swooning. His vulnerability and misguided guilt will have you wanting to hug him after you tie his delicious self to the bed. He is one hot alpha male. His snarly, dry British sarcasm and creative blend of words will tantalize all the senses

Savannah Shepard is a struggling photographer. After losing her job at the local newspaper she is forced to take on several jobs to make ends meet. When she takes on the job of being a temporary housekeeper for Gavin Cooke, her life has just taken on another crappy job. The man is a complete jerk. He assumes too much, sees too little, and berates everything. He may think she’s a lamb and he’s the big bad wolf . He has another thing coming, Savannah has taken on the wolves and beat them to the ground. She is a tigress in a lamb’s skin.

Gavin and Savannah’s relationship is combustible and every surface they touch goes up in flames. Gavin may be domineering and Savannah may seem submissive but all is not what it seems. Together these two will find all the right ingredients to make the perfect combination that will intoxicate the readers.

There will be explosive sexual chemistry, panty dripping scenes, dramatic tear jerking moments, swooning romance, shocking actions, and a new story with a happy ending. Their journey will keep the readers captivated. I will say this, it is a good thing that Savannah and Gavin have their own persona Yoda, Brody Markham.

Sawyer Bennett has broke the mold with Sugar On The Edge. Her star is shining bright!

Sugar On The Edge The Last Call Series Volume 3 Sawyer Bennett 9781940883212 Books Reviews

Of the three books I've read in this series, this is my least favorite (Make it a Double is the best one by far). There was too much sex at the expense of the plot. I get it, they're hot for each other, but great sex doesn't sustain a relationship. I wanted more from these characters.

Gavin kept referring to Savannah as "Sweet". Yes she's sweet, she's basically just a nice, caring person. There are lots of women in the world like that, she's not a unicorn! She's also too much of a doormat and doesn't seem to have a lot of ambition. She wants to be a wildlife photographer, yet doesn't really do anything to make that happen. It's NEVER going to happen in the small town she's in. Gavin was unrealistically wealthy. He's had one successful book, he's not Stephen King. But that seems to work out well for Savannah and her lack of ambition. He's also another guy whose rudeness get excused because of his good looks.

I did feel for Gavin in regards to the Charlie story. And I did like how Savannah helped him out of his darkness. They did make a good couple once they were actually together. I liked Savannah's relationship with Brody, that was sweet.

The conflict near the end I could see coming a mile away. The way Gavin handled it was horrible, but predictable. How long he let it drag out was unforgivable and then Savannah played the doormat again.

****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****SPOILER****

There is no way any pharmacist would give a woman of childbearing age an Rx for antibiotics and not tell her it affects her birth controls pills. And Savannah's excuses were really weak. Stuff like that makes me crazy!
I loved the first two books in this series. This one not so much.
I loved Savannah, Gavin I struggled with.
Savannah was the shy, introverted struggling photographer. Trying to keep herself afloat by cleaning houses.
Gavin, the wealthy, British, dark, brooding jerk. In need of quiet solitude to finish his next novel.
He needs a housekeeper, she needs the money.
Savannah I really liked. Yes she was quiet, a bit meek and mild, but when pushed she definitely had the backbone and heart to push right back. She was very capable of taking care of herself. But chose the more peaceable approach first.
Gavin was harder to like. I understood where his anger and nastiness came from, I just didn’t care for it. He could have chosen so many other ways to deal with his grief, but he chose drugs, alcohol and sex. Not just sex, but filthy sex.
He delighted in “breaking” women. And was determined to break Savannah just because she was sweet. He was sexually aggressive with women. While it was all consensual it was uncomfortable to read.
Towards the end of the book Savannah has helped Gavin, bringing him out of that dark place he’s been living in for so long. Once they became a couple, he changed for the better. But just when I started to really like him, he goes and abandons Savannah. Accusing her of horrible things and leaving her on her own for months knowing she has no job, no money. Making no effort to reach out to her, even after he figures out he was the one in the wrong. He waits for her to seek him out. And Savannah was way to quick to forgive and forget.
I would have loved to see more story, more of their getting to know each other, and less sex. This read more like erotica than a romance. Way too much sex. At least for me, I skipped a lot of the sex scenes.
The other issue I had, which is probably just me, but I hated that Gavin took another woman home after meeting Savannah. Even though they are not together yet, you know they’re going to end up there. It just felt wrong.
Overall it was not a bad book, just not my style of romance. It kept me engaged enough to keep reading. It does end with an HEA. I loved seeing the past characters. Brody was such a good friend and protector of Savannah. I will continue reading the series.
