I came across this book while doing research on the Dead Stream Swamp for a group backpacking expedition I'm leading there later in the year. Having grown up in Roscommon County, having worked for district's state legislators for 15 years on conservation issues, and now living in Grand Rapids, the story hit home. The local area's history, vernacular, customs, businesses, even family names are exceptionally authentic. The author did a phenomenal job illustrating present day western Roscommon and eastern Missaukee Counties. On top of that, the short chapters and fast moving action, draw the reader along, making it hard to set this book down. With invasive species such as the sea lamprey, quagga mussels and zebra mussels threatening inland lakes and streams as well as the Great Lakes, and the current debate about fracking and Line 5, the environmental theme is unfortunately all too real.Tags : The Jack Creek Horror - Kindle edition by C J Coombes, Maria denBoer, Nancy Burke Smith, Martha Hart. The Jack Creek Horror edition by C J Coombes Maria denBoer Nancy Burke Smith Martha Hart Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Jack Creek Horror, a tale that will grab you by the throat and not release you until you're gasping for air! A must read for those who love suspense with an environmental twist. It will keep you up nights pondering the devastating effects of humanity's decisions that interrupt the natural flow of nature.
I was hooked (pun intended) right from the start. Found the characters to
be very real, I could picture them in my mind. The suspense just continued to build, I didn't want to put the book down. Having some knowledge of certain types of invasive species, I found the plot quite chilling and believable. Don't think I will go fishing any time soon!
Another well-written story by C. J. Coombes that is sure not to disappoint. The Jack Creek Horror is a thriller that will leave you considering the possibility of your worst nightmare becoming a reality. It holds you captive until the end and will have you recommending it to your friends. I recommend this book for reading around the campfire during your next camping trip. Just don't go near the water!
I thoroughly enjoyed his Claus series of books! I was a little leery of a horror book. But, the book did not disappointment. I could not stop reading it. This book is very entertaining from the first page to the last. Loved the Michigan setting. It really makes you stop and think about what we are doing to the world. Would love to see it made into a movie. Another excellent piece of work from C J Coombes!
I am currently reading 'The Jack Creek Horror' and it is mesmerizing! Even my new kittens can't tear me away. Can hardly wait to start reading 'Claus'.
We will continue to carry any and all of Mr. Coombes books in The General . I am so glad he stopped in and we started talking literature, etc. GREAT BOOK!
There's a killer in the inland lakes in Michigan. It's killing fish, animals, people, and leaving behind little but bleached-white bones. It's growing and it's traveling. Hunting.
When environmental horror is plausible, it's all the more frightening. This author clearly did his research. I couldn't read it in one sitting simply because I needed relief from the relentless suspense. Now that's horror!
This book kept me turning the page for the first 75%, but I had to hurry through the last one hundred pages, as I just did not care about the story anymore. The characters were not well-developed, and the "discoveries" of the bodies were all too similar to really keep the story interesting. Could've been a hundred pages shorter and gotten to the point a bit quicker.
