Mutiny in Space The Thousand Worlds eBook Rod Walker

A book reminiscent of R.A. Heinlein's Juvenal's, but a bit less structured. The book had some somewhat flat writing, and maybe a bit too breezy at times, but it moved along quickly. It very much felt like 1950's SF, except for a few contemporary computer terms and techniques. The guilty pleasure parts were reading about buckets of Space Marxists getting killed, and collectivist philosophy being called stupid by a smart kid. This was very much the opposite of poorly researched, but smoothly written PC pablum passing for Great SF literature, these days. Not great, but a competent novel.

Mutiny in Space The Thousand Worlds eBook Rod Walker Reviews

Mutiny in Space was a fun read. It harkens back to the golden age juvenile science fiction, but I enjoyed it as an adult. It is neither candy coated nor dystopian. He tackles the fallout of political upheaval and piracy with a quick and easy style. I'm looking forward to reading more from Mr. Walker!
A story is first and foremost made to entertain. This one does that 3x over going by so quickly that if it had been printed on paper I might have ripped a page. The characters are not deep but are much better than pasteboard.
A good story to get a boy to try if he doesn't seem to want to read.
This is a fun "space opera" novel with a touch of political thought, not too different from the best Robert Heinlein so-called "juvenile" space opera novels that we all loved so much back in the day. The writing and storyline are good here, and I really enjoyed this one. Hoping that there is more to come from this author. RJB.
This is a decent first juvenile novel. On the plus side, it has a lot of action scenes told in clear, simple language that younger readers should find easy to follow. The limited number of characters makes it easy to keep track of who's who. The basic plot boils down to good guys and bad guys fighting for control of spaceships using a variety of tactics.

That said, Mutiny in Space is not nearly on par with any of the Heinlein juvenile novels. (An admittedly very high bar.) If you buy it expecting that level of writing based on how the book is being promoted, you will be disappointed.
Mutiny in Space will bring enjoyment to sci-fi fans, especially those that prefer realism. The plot is simple, yet satisfying, and the beginning is strong. However, it drags a bit in the third chapter, and there are a few typos, though not enough to make it unreadable. That being said, I recommend this book.
This review is written more from my son then me. I liked the book but it is definitely written for a boys market. Its not subtle about who the heroes and villains are. But my 11 year old son who does not read much loved it and thought it was the best thing ever. I think its perfectly written for that audience. Lots of adventure and problem solving and no romance or too may shades of grey.
I'm a big fan of Heinlein's "juvenile" novels and was interested to read this as it is being promoted as a modern attempt to recreate a storyline in the style of a grand-master ( I think this was modeled on Starman Jones perhaps...) I'm always looking for reading material for my young sons as well and find the classics much better than almost any modern writings. ( Although I thought the first Percy Jackson series was quite good and my sons and I enjoyed reading them together, the second series devolved into horse****.) I downloaded the sample first and was not completely sold on the story, but because I felt that an honest attempt was being made I purchased the book anyway to see if it improved. Overall, I found the writing to be competent, if not inspiring. I did not feel the sense of "adventure" I would usually experience reading a Heinlein or Burroughs novel for the first time. I don't think kids under 15 will understand all the political/commissar/Social Party aspects in the first part of the book, and in retrospect I don't think having the first two words be "In restrospect" very welcoming to younger readers.
TLDR; A good attempt that could be improved upon, and I encourage the author to do so in future novels.
